Firstly you have to understand that the gemstone cannot be BOTH ruby and quartz. They are both very different gemstones.

However; there are many 'Commercial' names given to gems in order for the Merchant to sell them easier.

For example: Cape Ruby sounds much more valuable than what it really is: Pyrope Garnet. So whoever has offered you a Ruby Quartz is simply trying to 'Up the Price' by making the gemstone more desirable.

Quartz itself comes in many colors. If it is Purple it is called Amethyst. Yellow is Citrine. There is also Rose Quartz or Smokey Quartz - but there is NO RED COLOR, so there is something wrong here - or the item has been heat treated. More likely it may not be a Quartz at all, but a lesser or synthetic gem like colored Cubic Zirconia (CZ's).
