Ring Sizing Question: I have a Tiffany ring which need's to be sized up 2 sizes.

Can a sterling silver ring be sized?

I just thought it could be done only on Gold and White Gold jewlery.

Answer: G’day and many thanks for your query

The simple answer is - Yes - But…

Any of the precious metals can be sized but it depends on two factors.

1: How was the ring MADE?

2: How is it going to be resized?

The first one the Jeweler should know. Some rings (especially silver) are cast in a mould and tend to be very porous inside. This tends to make them Crack when resized.

The other factor here is has the ring been Plated.

White gold rings are often plated to make them very shiny - almost Chrome like. Silver rings too are often plated to prevent tarnish or hide joins.

Again your repairing Jeweler will know and advise accordingly.

The second factor depend on the jeweler and how they are going to resize the ring.

The correct way is to cut the band (known as the Shank) and insert a small piece of metal to the correct size if going UP in size.

If down they simply cut the shank and take a small piece out and then rejoin the shank at the new size.

However - some jewelers use a stretching machine which expands the shank up a couple of sizes.

This can also be done by stretching on a special tapered tool called a Triblet and the jeweler simply taps the ring up the shaft of the triblet to the correct size.

Your best option is to take it into your local FRIENDLY jeweler and have them take a look at it.

This should be free just for them to examine the ring. They will charge for a re-size though.

If you are NOT happy with what they have to say - find another one.

Ask around family or friends to see if they have ever had a ring sized.

Word of mouth is the best way to discover good jewelers.

You might like to add this question and even follow up once you have had your jeweler look at it and again after it’s been done.
