Diamonds:
There is nothing like a Diamond. It is the Hardest material (almost 140 times harder than its nearest gemstone) and is named after the Greek word ‘Adamas’ which means ‘Unconquerable’.
This is also why it is used in Engagement rings as it symbolises ‘Everlasting’.
Unlike other gemstones, its primary perfection is based on LACK of colour. The pure colourless or White is the most Valuable, although many shades of Yellow are common.
Famous Diamonds are sometimes highly coloured (known as ‘Fancy’ in the Trade) such as the bright Green Dresden Diamond or the Blue Hope… Continue reading Diamonds | 2 Comments

duel question concerning uncut pricing
Question: 1 is a Ruby a very dark red garnet? and how do I determine the pricing on my sapphires and possible rubies?
Your reply will be extremely helpful. Thank you…
Answer: G’day and many thanks for your query
Your first gemstone you have described as being a ruby – but then say it is a dark red garnet? it can’t be both so have you had them identified correctly?
Once that is done – an assuming they are already cut but not yet set (loose gems) – you can… Continue reading Uncut Gemstone Prices

Dating Jewellery and Gemstones:
I forgot to ask…around what time did they start marking gold w/K?
Or what time period did they just use hallmarks on the gold jewellery?
This would help me date it somewhat.
Thanks. Nancy
G’day Nancy and many thanks for your query
But you are going to be VERY disappointed with the answer, because they have been hallmarking gold since 1238 – YES 1238!
Generally they consider around 1300 as the real start in Europe.
So a general scan does not help – you have to get more… Continue reading Dating Jewellery and Gemstones

Coral Beads Question:
Is it okay to buy coral bead jewellery if it has cracks in some of the beads.
Will these worsen with age and can they be repaired?
Thanks –
Chandara
Here’s My Answer:
G’day Chandana and many thanks for your query
Like most things in life – perfect costs more.
The perfect diamond costs more than one with inclusions or a poor color. Perfect Sapphires costs more because their blue colour is better than the others at a lower price.
It is the same with everything – including… Continue reading Coral Beads

appraising my Alexandrite ring Question:
My mother has an Alexandrite ring bought in Egypt by her mother about 45-50 years ago.
Where is the best place to get it appraised.
Also my mother does not want to have to send it off for valuation.
Thanks for your help…

G’day Leah and many thanks for your query.

Colored Diamond Values Question:
Hello, last week I found a 1.34Ct rootbeer colored diamond, cubic in shape with slight valley like fissures.
Stone reflects metallic with rootbeer flashes.
Would a stone such as this have a higher value to a collector, or to have, “someone professional?” evaluate it?
It is really an attractive stone.
Thanks…
Answer:
G’day Alan and many thanks for your query
However I don’t know what you mean?
I am assuming you have been fossicking in the outback, and as you said “Found a 1.34Ct rootbeer coloured diamond”… Continue reading Colored Diamond Values

Identification of Cat’s Eye Gemstones Question:
Greetings from Australia.
I have inherited what I thought was cat eyes jewellery but I find they look nothing like the images on google.
My cats eyes are round, dime-size and have a eyeball look about them.
They have a dark green round centre, are surrounded by Creamy white and have a dab of rusty brown.
Thank you for your time.
Answer: G’day Joseph and many thanks for your query.
What you are describing to me is called Operculem Cat’s Eye, or sometimes called Chinese Cat’s Eye
