Firstly don't assume that a big (or small) red or reddish colored gemstone is a ruby. There are many colored gems - including glass - which it might be.

You will need to get your local FRIENDLY gemologist/jeweler to take a quick look at it and get it tested first.

There may be a fee for this - shop around.

Also the hallmarks don't mean anything in jewelry circles either. Many people have their initials or the initials and dates of a loved one engraved inside jewelry.

What was your Grandfather's name?

Is he PAT or did he know a PAT?

The numbers are not standard quality marks like 375 for 9 carat gold or 925 for Sterling Silver - so they may be a date

They might even be a Swiss Bank account number (I'd stick with that for a great talking point and a good laugh) right the way through to a Military number. Who knows?

It is NOT standard jewelry marks anyway.

The PAT should NOT be mistaken for PLAT which is a mark to indicate Platinum. Beware - get it tested.

You might like to add this query to my blog at http://how2valuejewelry.com/ as other may have had a similar problem. Can't hurt anyway and who knows what answers you may get.

Hope this helps...
