How To Sell Your Gemstones Question: Hello, I recently inherited about 40 decent sized Emeralds (not the greatest) but not really low quality either.
Gemstones: Quality and Value, Volume 1
Price: $137.75 USD
About 20 star ruby's as well in the same condition.
What is the range for these types of gem stones (low to high) and in your opinion what is the lowest price I should accept if I were to take these to a jeweler and sell them?
I know you can't see them and I appreciate any "general" input you may have.

Oh you have a problem!
The first thing you MUST accept is that (generally) Jewelers won't buy from you.

Because they get all their gemstones on 90 day invoice - and all at Trade Prices. PLUS they know (without testing) exactly what they are buying. With you??? They would have to test them (costs money) and you would want cash first -etcetera, etcetera etcetera...
There have been so many of our Troops who purchased gemstones overseas only to find out when they got home - Not worth a nickel.
Now I'm not saying your gemstones are imitation. What I am saying is "what proof have you got that they are real?"
For you to get a qualified Gemologist to test and appraise your parcel would cost you a small fortune.
So what are you left with? Check on eBay to do a comparison shop and see what other gems MIGHT be selling for. Not always accurate either. If you go down that road you have more costs (to eBay) even before you get one cent back - and you still have the problem of authenticating them in the first place.
If you have a local and REPUTABLE Auction House nearby or can even send them to a family TRUSTED member where there IS an Auction House - they will generally have a qualified geologist on staff to give you an approximate price BEFORE you commit to the sale.
Do not advertise them in your local paper. You do NOT want people coming to your home knowing you have something of Value there.
Sorry to be so negative.
Try your local MANUFACTURING jewelers first. Your high street Mall jewelers won't be interested. Antique dealers might be another avenue but remember they ALWAYS buy very low.

I think I will look into the Auction idea that you spoke of. I live in Phoenix, AZ and I’m sure there has to be auction houses here that would handle that sort of thing.

G’day Charlene and many thanks for your query.
This is always a difficult one because the TRADE generally won’t buy from the public. The reason for this is because they get their gemstones on a 90 day invoice PLUS they can arrange returns.
There is also the element of Guarantee (they like to deal with people in the industry with whom they can trust).
You might be lucky going door to door around the local jewelry stores but it’s very hard work - lots of time - you have to sell at trade prices. Remember that jewelers buy all their gemstones at half price or less.
eBay is another choice - at least you can do some comparison shopping there and see what prices they are getting. There might also be a local auction house in your area (sorry I don’t know where you live).
As I said in the beginning - this is always a hard question because nobody likes the answer. Let me know how you get on.
BTW - DO NOT sell by placing an ad in your local newspaper. You DO NOT want people coming into your home knowing you have something of value there.

I have a 203 carat citrine that i got appraised at about $6000. Many places say that it’s too large of a gemstone for them to be able to sell.Any ideas of what kind of a place buys this size of a gemstone?
