Aquamarine color Question: I have fallen in love with the aquamarine gemstone.
Beryl (Butterworths Gem Books)
$249.95 USD
I do not understand about the color and value, etc.
I bought a beautiful, 3 ct aquamarine & 1/3 ct diamond, 14k gold estate ring from a reputable online dealer. It is VSI clarity.
I'm disappointed that it is such a very pale blue hue, it seems to have almost no color, maybe silvery?
I think many people would not recognize it as an aquamarine.
I also bought the ring because the design is so unique--it has diamond "wings" on all sides.
Q. Are the most pale hues of less value?
Q. I was told it was "genuine." Is it likely natural or could it be synthetic?
How does this affect value?
I estimate it is about 30-40 yrs. old.

I also have an antique Art Deco filigree 2 ct. light sky blue aquamarine ring that I'm crazy about.
Many thanks,
Pauline
Answer: G'day Pauline and many thanks for your query.
I have to agree with you on Aquamarine. It is one of THE most beautiful gems - but did you know it is the same gem as Emerald? If it is green - it is called emerald while if it is blue - it is called Aquamarine. They are BOTH Beryls.
The point though is simply this: the deeper or richer the color - the more valuable it is. This is especially true when it comes to an almost 'silvery' or pale to colorless gemstone. The value drops off quite sharp.
Assuming it really is Aquamarine (have you had it tested by a qualified gemologist?) it is unlikely to be a synthetic because manufacturers only make synthetic gems which are VALUABLE. Good color is the prime reason, so a pale version would be unlikely unless it is NOT an Aqua but something else. Get it tested!
While your gemologist appraiser will charge you for this, at least then you'll have a written report to prove it is - what you think it is, so you can stop guessing.
You might also like to add this query to our Jewelry Forum where there are more 'Experts' as other may have had a similar problem. Can't hurt anyway and who knows what answers you may get.
Hope this helps...

Flower Full of Legends Heather is the second most recognizable floral symbol of Scotland. This plant had many practical uses for thatching, dyes, ropes, brooms and more. It also treated cough, consumption, anxiety, arthritis, and rheumatism. It also made Heather Ale. The Picts made it for centuries with a secret recipe that did not require the use of malt, hops, or sweeteners. Archaeologists have found traces of a fermented drink containing heather on a 3000 year old pottery shard. Legend states that in the 4th century, Vikings defeated the Pictish army and cornered the King and his son…
