Pricing On Emerald
Emerald Question: Any tips on a reasonable buy of a vvs or vsi emerald?
Beryl and Its Color Varieties: Aquamarine, Heliodor, Morganite, Goshenite, Emerald and Red Beryl
Price: $32.99 USD
Are they all oil filled?
Why such the subjective pricing?
I observe such huge discrepencies in the so called “value” of the stone?
Thanks for your help.

Answer: G’day and many thanks for your query
The first thing you should understand is that terms such as VVS or VS are ONLY applicable to Diamonds. They have NO such influence when it comes to Emerald.
Emeralds SHOULD have inclusions in the them. It is called ‘Jardin’ which means ‘Garden’ and is one of the ways we can tell if a gem is genuine and even where it comes from.
So all these Inclusions are Normal for Emerald.
Oil filled is also a mis-use of the term because the gemstone can’t be ‘Filled’ with oil? They treat the gem so that oil goes into the many surface cracks and fissures which again are normal. This treatment improves the color and prevents the gem for further erosion. Again Normal in the Trade.
Emeralds ARE valued differently (same as diamonds or any other gemstone) but Color is the Main indicator followed by the quality of the cut and the internal ‘Jardin’ as mentioned. The origin also tends to affect price because ‘Columbian Emerald’ would be more valuable than say ‘Indian’ emerald. All of these factors come together in pricing.
Your best bet is to look on places like eBay or the Online Gemstone Center (fairly new site) at http://www.online-gemstone-center.com/ for information and comparison pricing.
You local FRIENDLY jeweler should be able to order in several gems for you to look at before making a purchase.
Hope this helps…
