Turquoise is an attractive gemstone that is wonderful in silver turquoise jewelry. Chemically it's a mixture of phosphates and aluminum with some traces of copper oxide, from which it gets its blue color, and manganese oxide, calcium, zinc and iron. The green color arises from the iron or aluminum and yellow is from the zinc. Green is the most common color for turquoise gemstones, and furthermore blue gemstones often turn green if exposed to sunlight for any length of time. Different mixtures of these elements give the gemstone its array of colors, with the most highly prized being those with an intense blue color and yellow gemstones having the lowest value. The best quality gems, Persian turquoise for instance, do not tend to fade and maintain their beautiful blue color indefinitely.
Some gems have a major color with a spider web matrix on the surface of the gem consisting of lines of a different color. This is caused by uneven dispersal of the different elements present in the gemstone and the lines can be brown, yellow or black in several patterns. However unmarked gemstones are more highly prized than gems with a spider web matrix although turquoise stonse of intense blue color, even though they have a spider web matrix, are more valued than yellow or green pure stones. Untreated stones of a pure color, that is those which are not marked with spider web matrix, are rarer and are extremely highly valued.
Treating Turquoise
Around 10% of turquoise used in jewelry is the naturally occurring, high quality stone. More than 90% is processed from rough, soft turquoise so that it is hard enough to be used in jewelry. This treatment also improves resilience and develops the gemstone's color. Turquoise that comes from a few countries, i.e. China, is much too soft and needs to be treated. However the treatment produces attractive gemstones, which, although less valuable than unprocessed gems, still make superb jewelry. These procedures enhance the gemstones color as well as making them harder so that they last for much longer. A treatment method that is used to enhance the color consists of injecting a dye in epoxy resin into the gemstone. The color is durable and will not fade. Chinese turquoise is hardened by injecting the gemstones with a liquid plastic. An additional approach is to inject epoxy resin without a color in order stabilize the stone but will not change the color.
